• An Artists is a person who is good at stage performance. Like actors, cinematographers, dancers, singers. Those are the artisans. And a calligrapher is an artist.
• Artisan is a person who is good at crafts. Or manual work, such as potter, Carpenter, and tailor. 

Therefore calligraphy is a visual art, it is not a craft. we can’t consider calligraphers as craftsmen or artisan. Calligraphers are artists. 

Artisan is a person who is good at crafts such as carpentry and tailors. Calligraphy is a visual art. It is not a craft, therefore a calligrapher is an artist not an artisan.

Though this is a very simple and clear answer that, calligrapher is an artist. Calligraphy is not craft. Because of some inappropriate information and miscommunication, people get confused.

I would strongly suggest you to not believe such wrong information, and don’t get confused.  Calligraphy comes under visual art. It is a visual art of writing beautiful words and letters.

What is the Difference Between Artist and Artisan?

There are mainly three different words for an artist. Artist, artiste and artisan. Each of them holds a different meaning and type of artist. Let’s see them one by one.

1. The first word is artist itself. It means a person who works or draws on canvas. Like painters, fine artists and steck artists, and so on. 
2. Second word is artiste. While pronouncing, we stretch it a little bit more. It means a person who is good at stage performance, like an actor, singer, dancer, or cinematographer. Those are artiste.
3. Third and last one is artisan. It refers to a person who is good in craft and manual work. Like pottery, carpentry, Woodcraft, and goldsmiths. They are artisan and work practically with tools. 

So there are mainly those words in English and their meaning. From their meaning it is clear that. Calligrapher is an artist not an artiste or artisan or even craftsman.

So it’s a very easy and clear discussion, don’t ever get confused on this.  Because there is plenty of misleading information on the internet. In forums and user generated content people give very inappropriate and confusing information on it. Therefore it may become confusing for some people. But there is no need to get confused about this. 

And I confirmed this information from a great calligraphy artist and the artist I already know. So it’s not general or my personal quote on this.

Calligrapher is an artist, not an artisan or craftsman. An Artist is a person who is good in creative skill specially on canvas or paper. Artists draw on paper or canvas and their art. For example, painter, sketch artist, or such as. 

Artisan or craftsman is a person who is good at manual and practical work, like carpenter, gold smith, pottery, and woodcrafter. Therefore a calligrapher is an artist and not an artisan. 

Calligraphy is an art. A visual art of beautiful writing, it is not a craft. It is considered a visual art of writing, therefore a calligrapher is an artist. And we can not consider calligraphers as artisan.

Craftsman and artisan is a person who does practical work and crafting with his tools. Artist draws visuals on the canvas with this brush, pen and tools. There is a difference in both. We can’t mic them.

Though this is a straight forward answer. but there are some sources on the internet, which show wrong and confusing information. Therefore it creates confusion in normal people.

In forums and in user-generated content, people  wrote their personal opinion and inappropriate information and that created confusion about this topic.

Therefore I personally asked a few great calligraphers and calligraphy artists I know , to answer this question. They simplify it for me. And from all this research I did, it is clear and simple that calligraphy is a visual art. and the person who does calligraphy is called an artist not a artisan. Calligraphy is not a craft.
